Mail Call

April 12, 2005

"If development is the answer to everybody's problems, then why is California and Los Angeles in particular in so much financial trouble? Don't tell me it's Democratic spending because Gov. Schwarzenegger has been in office long enough to turn it around if the answer were that simple. Development only adds to the problems and the expenses of the community that is out of control to begin with."

- Washington County

"I'm reading this article from this person in Funkstown talking about the people in wheelchairs and what have you and they just sit and stare making noises and are we going to starve them to death like Terri Schiavo. I resent that because I had nothing to do with Terri Schiavo's death so I resent that 'we.'"

- Washington County

"I'd like to know if they ever plan on raising the minimum wage so the poor people can buy gasoline. I think it was wrong to put a oil baron in the White House but since he makes $400,000 a year he doesn't need to worry about what the price of gasoline is - $2.26 in Greencastle as of today."

"To the 70-year-old who must like to hear noisy skateboards. After eight or more hours of work, I like to sit down and watch the news, feed my three kids supper and relax while in between doing laundry and housework. There is plenty of things for these kids to do like skateboard in designated areas and not on sidewalks and streets causing accidents and making noise. Where are the parents? Children learn what they live."

"I would like to receive the yarn knitting, needles and hooks that this lady has in (Mail Call). Our church youth and children in our Sunday school are making hats for a shelter so we could definitely use the materials. Thank you, my phone number is 301-733-8741."

- Boonsboro

"To the individual who left the comment in the paper about wanting food for a needy family, please leave your phone number in and I will get in touch with you. Blessings indeed."

- Washington County

"I hear so many people downing the hospital and our medic crews. I would like to say thank you to the emergency room's third floor nurses and assistant nurses and also the Clear Spring and Maugansville rescue company, they are a great bunch of people."

- Clear Spring

"There is a lady that wants to donate yarn and crochet needles. I am not a organization but I could really use those. My number is 301-393-4787. I am a homemaker and I like to crochet things for my daughter, my parents, my husbands' parents and things like that. I really could use the yarn and everything."

- Washington County

"Mail callers calling in and worrying about pedophiles and the sex offenders in Hagerstown and being as close as neighbors to them. It's no wonder, as much as our three prisons here in Hagerstown are kicking them out into Hagerstown instead of making them go back home."

- Washington County

"I read in the paper where they have found marijuana grown in a house in Shepherdstown. They would be shocked if they came to the southern part of Washington County to find what's growing there because I think there is someone distributing it around. I know it's hard to catch but there's more people planting their garden in the house in the basement than in their yards."

- Washington County

"I have known a young woman for all my life, she receives support from a nonprofit provider in Washington County. She is being forced to move from her house under threat of discharge from the agency. She has received support from them for a long time. This is flat-out wrong so and it needs to be stopped. Some state agency needs to investigate these nonprofits and how they do business."

"You in the red pickup truck, you almost ran me over at Fountainhead Plaza going through the stop sign. I have two witnesses so watch out for other people. Although I'm 90 years old, I want to live a little longer."

- Hagerstown

"I just want to make a comment, how come it's OK for parents not to pay their child support? The maximum they'll get is 90 days in jail but if the mother doesn't feed or take care or put a roof over their kid's head then the mother will be locked up for a very long time. Fathers who don't pay their child support needs to be considered a felony."

- Hagerstown

"I noticed in the paper that an SUV was negotiating shifting lanes on South Washington Street. I guess he was in a hurry to get to the gas station."

- Smithsburg

"About a week ago I contacted Mr. Eric of the Public Works office about getting some maintenance done on Edgewood Drive and three days later lo and behold the work was done. Your public works personnel can't beat that for a job well done."

- Hagerstown
