Luxury, practicality and space - This home has it all

April 11, 2005|by DAVE THOMPSON of HomeSource

This week's HomeSource Feature Home mixes luxury and practicality in one large package.

For luxury, start the two-story colonial's location in the upscale Black Rock Estates subdivision on a lot almost an acre in size with views of the Black Rock Golf Course and a beautiful stone barn.

Go inside, and you're greeted by a stylish staircase and two-story foyer. To the left of the entrance is the living room and to the right a dining room, both with identical 16-by-16 dimensions that provide plenty of room for entertaining. Crown moldings and chair rails accent the formal nature of the rooms. Both rooms feature the hardwood flooring that covers the entire main level of the house.

Step out of the dining room toward the rear of the house and you'll come to a huge (29-by-20) gourmet eat-in kitchen that provides a feast for the eye. The latest in appliances are located among granite countertops and what seems to be acres of cherry cabinetry, featuring dovetailed drawers and pullout shelves.

A cleverly angled center island breaks up the kitchen expanse. Practicality begins to emerge amidst the luxury with a granite-topped built-in desk to one side that's a perfect place to draw up grocery lists or pay off household bills. Another practical touch is the large pantry that's located near the entrance to the three-car garage. There are washer-dryer hookups in the pantry if a downstairs laundry room is desired.

Adjoining the kitchen is a sizable (20-by-18) family room. It's an easy matter to prepare a snack in the kitchen and adjourn to the family room to read or watch TV - another touch of practicality. A built-in cherry bookcase and corner gas fireplace are there to add warmth to any occasion.

Head upstairs and the luxury theme resumes in the form of five spacious bedrooms and three full baths. The master bedroom measures a generous 30-by-14 feet, and there's a second bedroom that isn't much smaller at 24-by-18. Located off the master bedroom is a west-facing balcony that the current owners call the "sunset" balcony. The balcony overlooks a wood deck and a patio made from attractive tumbler pavers below.

It doesn't get much more luxurious than the master bath, which features a Jacuzzi whirlpool bath and a separate Jacuzzi shower and steamer stall for a touch of the spa at home. A double sink, attractive ceramic tile (the other bathrooms are also tiled) and brass faucets are other nice touches.

Upstairs, too, practical features mix in with the luxury. There's loads of closet and storage space, including a big walk-in off the master bath and a large storage closet off the upstairs hallway. Pull-down attic stairs inside the hall closet lead to even more storage space. Bedrooms at the end of the house opposite the master suite are connected in a manner that would make it easy to set up an in-law or guest suite.

A large, upstairs laundry room is yet another bow to the practical. (Remember, there are also connections downstairs.)

Not so practical but a lot of fun is a whimsical child's playroom that can be accessed through an entry at the back of one of the closets. It's a great hideaway for the small set.

Still need more space? There's an unfinished basement that runs the length of the house, and the side-facing three-car garage can swallow plenty of gear in addition to vehicles.

With spring and its greening effect approaching, the professional landscaping touches on the home's big lot will stand out.

So there you have it - space, luxury, practicality and beauty. What more could be desired in a house?
