Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Can somebody please explain to me why I have to pay a $2.50 restoration fee for my water bill each month and for how long? I'm on a fixed income. Washington County has already struck us with the water and sewer debt. Where is all of our tax money going? I wanted to vote Republican but now that has changed."

"This is to the Republican who called in and said the Democrats are doing all the whining and that's what they do best. That's what the Republicans did best during the eight years Clinton was in office. All they could do was complain because everything was so rosy."

- Washington County

"I'm just calling to say that I think changing Memorial Boulevard to Willie Mays Way is ridiculous. Willie Mays did nothing for this town other than play his first professional baseball game here. That is ridiculous naming a street in his name only because of that."

- Hagerstown

"Well let's see, Mail Call has people calling in their religious opinions and now they have people advertising their churches and what church you should go to. Why don't you just call this 'Religion Call.'"

"I just wanted to say I thought it was a shame that our city would even consider changing the name of Memorial Boulevard. What other way do we have to honor our vets?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling to tell you that not everybody has a computer. They can't do all this stuff you ask like using a computer to report their votes on these questions you have in the paper. Most of us, the older folks, use phones. We don't have computers."

"I was told that I can't get a government check from my pension and a government Social Security check at the same time. I see in the newspaper where federal (government) workers will get Social Security (which is also government). This sounds like double dipping, like they wanted to pull on me."

- Boonsboro

"No athlete is a hero, they are just playing games. Let Willie Mays go to Iraq and do something great and then maybe he will be memorialized."

- Smithsburg

"I want to say something to these people who complain that we are bashing the president. Well, the president should be bashed because he doesn't care about gas prices. The higher the oil goes, the more money he puts in the bank for his own self. Think about that sometimes and then bash the president."

- Washington County

"Is there a VA representative in Hagerstown that represents the veterans from Maryland? I want one that will answer the phone."

- Boonsboro

"I found in school many, many years ago that boys are usually cowards. They almost always bully people when there are other kids around to perform for. I also found that telling the teacher about them is the worst thing you can do, that will just brand you a coward in the eyes of the other students. I found that a good smack in the chops of the boy usually takes care of the problem. It did for me and it did for my children. Like I said, boys are cowards and they will only bully the kids that will allow them to do it."

"This information here they keep saying about why did we allow our president to send our people out for a useless war is unbelievable. Do we really want to forget what they did to us back on 9/11? We need never to forget and we need to make sure that we show love but at the same time we can't in any way at all forget 9/11."

- Hagerstown

"The ice rink foundation said they won't talk to the public about the current problems. The city, i.e., the public, owns the ice rink, I believe, and the ice rink foundation should explain any and all questions aksed of them by the public through our elected officials."

- Halfway

"This is just a call to say I hope that the road crews are going to be out soon fixing the potholes because the potholes are getting deeper by the day. It's springtime now and it would be a good idea to get some pothole crews out there and fix those potholes."

- Washington County

"They say to send phone cards to our servicemen in Iraq but I sent a 1,200-minute one for $40 and all he got out of it was 60 minutes. What a rip-off. I will send him stamps, paper and envelopes from now on."
