CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The preliminary hearing for a woman charged in connection with the drowning death of her infant daughter has been postponed until Tuesday, May 3, according to the Franklin County District Attorney's Office.

Jessica Bobbett, 21, of 300 S. Second St., Apt. A, was charged last week by Chambersburg police with endangering the welfare of a child in the Nov. 2, 2004, death of 11-month-old Ja-liyaha Aviles. The girl's twin brother, Jahleel, also was injured in the incident at Bobbett's former home at 212 Linden Ave.

Bobbett's hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, but Assistant District Attorney Nancy Meyers said it was continued so that a public defender could be appointed to represent the woman.

Police allege Bobbett had been drinking the night before and was asleep when her 3-year-old daughter placed the twins in the bathtub. Police were called to the house at 2:24 p.m. for a report of two infants in cardiac arrest.

The girl was pronounced dead at Chambersburg Hospital and her brother spent several weeks in Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, according to police.

Bobbett was released Friday from Franklin County Prison on $10,000 bond.
