Md. 77 construction to begin next week

SMITHSBURG - Work on a $1.9 million road project on Md. 77 is scheduled to begin next week, said Adrienne Cousler, spokeswoman for the State Highway Administration.

Cousler said the project, along a two-mile stretch between Md. 64 and Hopkins Lane, will realign the road in an area where several serious vehicle accidents have been reported.

"By taking the curve out, hopefully we'll eliminate the type of crashes that have occurred," Cousler said.

Cousler said overnight work - from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. - could be part of the project if it is delayed by inclement weather or if traffic delays in the area are significant during the day. She said the project will be completed this fall, likely in about 130 days.

According to an SHA news release, the project also will include patching, resurfacing, drainage improvements, traffic barrier improvements, replacement of signal detectors and the application of reflective pavement markings.
