Area roundup - Three Cougars team up to no-hit Tuscarora

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Jonathan Hash, Brian Collins and Richie Nelson combined to throw a no-hitter and Jefferson had plenty of offense to roll past Tuscarora 9-0 on Tuesday.

Hash struck out 10 in five innings and walked just one for the win. Collins struck out the side in the sixth and Nelson fanned one in the seventh.

Will Grantham doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Cougars (6-3). Corie Gustines added two hits and drove in a run.

Frederick 2, Urbana 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Billy Gross fired a four-hit shutout, striking out nine to lead Frederick over Urbana in a battle of unbeaten teams in the MVAL Chesapeake Conference.


Gross (3-0) did not walk a batter and has not allowed an earned run in 18 innings this season for the Cadets (4-0, 3-0). Gross scored the winning run in the fourth inning on a Tommy Gillmore single.

Steve Smith scattered five hits and struck out nine for Urbana.

Martinsburg 15-8, Middletown 9-6

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Martinsburg hit six home runs - including two each from A.J. Roberts and Brandon Armentrout - to sweep Middletown in a doubleheader at P.O. Faulkner Park.

Roberts hit both of his blasts in the first game, driving in five runs. Armentrout went 4-for-4 with a homer and five RBI and Scottie Smith also homered for the Bulldogs.

Armentrout and Aaron Stokes each homered for Martinsburg (4-4) in the nightcap.

Hyndman 9, Southern Fulton 0

HYNDMAN, Pa. - Tyler Elbin struck out three and allowed only one earned run for Southern Fulton (1-2, 0-2) in a loss to Hyndman (1-1, 1-1) in the Sideling Hill League.

Broadfording 18, MSD 4

FREDERICK, Md. - Alan Myers had two hits and drove in five runs as Broadfording Christian scored 12 runs in the first inning and rolled past Maryland School for the Deaf.

John Kehr, Michael Wallech and Josh Kehr each added two hits for the Lions (2-2). John Kehr had three RBI and Wallech added two.

Josh Bishop allowed one hit in four innings for the win. Bishop struck out six and walked six.

Calvary 9, Heritage 4

Kevin Sandell, Andrew Shank and Stephen Fincham each had two hits for Heritage Academy (0-1, 0-1) in the Eagles' loss to Calvary Christian (2-0, 2-0) in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference.

The Heights 8, St. John's-PH 4

FREDERICK, Md. - Scott Ritter had an RBI double for St. John's at Prospect Hall in the Vikings' loss to The Heights.

Nick Schultz pitched a complete game, giving up three earned runs for the Vikings (2-5).


Jefferson 6, Hancock 0

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Emily Liston had three hits in Jefferson's shutout victory over Hancock in the Apple Valley League.

Katie Golden struck out three for the Panthers (2-1, 0-1).

Musselman 6, Mercersburg Academy 1

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Cree Riley scattered five hits and struck out seven, but four errors hurt Mercersburg in a loss to Musselman.

The Blue Storm falls to 2-1.

Hyndman 10, Southern Fulton 2

HYNDMAN, Pa. - Candace Bard had two hits and an RBI for Southern Fulton, but the Indians struggled offensively against Hyndman (2-1, 2-1) in the Sideling Hill League.

Irma Appel had an RBI while Kelly Elbin struck out five for the Indians (0-3, 0-2).

Northern Bedford 11, McConnellsburg 1

LOYSBURG, Pa. - McConnellsburg was held to just one hit and committed four errors in dropping its Sideling Hill League opener.

Sarah Taylor recorded the lone hit for the Spartans (3-1, 0-1) in the first inning and later scored on a fielder's choice by Mandi Deshong.

Grace 16, Mountain View 2

Megan Cox allowed just two hits in four innings, striking out six and helping her own cause with a grand slam as Grace Academy won its season opener.

Megan Everett had two hits and three RBI, Rebecca Morgan had two hits and two RBI and Kelsey Shaffer added two hits for Grace.


Heritage 2, Calvary 1

Jen King scored a pair of unassisted goals to lead Heritage over Calvary Christian.

Cathy Johns and Jessica Ellis combined for nine saves for the Eagles (1-0).


Shippensburg 5-9, Shepherd 2-1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Mia Zappacosta went 3-for-3 for Shepherd University in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Shippensburg, but the Rams were swept by the Red Raiders.

Brooke Small had an RBI single for the Rams (13-7) in the first game. The Red Raiders (26-1) scored four runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.
