Mail Call

April 05, 2005

"I think the public has a right to know what is going on at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex, because taxpayers' money is used to subsidize the rink. Our tax money keeps the skating rink going."

- Washington County

"I see where the city is planning to spend $32.8 million on projects in Hagerstown but yet no one could step up and help Holly Place until those people were petrified to death that they were going to lose their home."

"I would like to give a big thank you to Marsha and her staff at Sagittarius for the Day of Beauty for cancer survivors. Your staff made everyone feel special that day and I really appreciate it."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"To the person complaining about the noise from skateboarders. Were you ever a kid? I was. I am 70 years old and they can skate at my place anytime. They have to have something to do and we even have a rail they can ride on. Chill out and let the kids be, don't sit at your window and wait for them and you won't know they are there."

"Here we go again. I see the fire companies still want a fire tax only this time they are calling it an emergency service fee. Before a fire tax, emergency service fee, or whatever you call this financial burden that is proposed on the backs of Washington County's residents, I say all fire companies must have their financial books audited for the last five years by an independent audited firm. Then the results should be reported in the newspaper. The public will be able to better judge whether or not the fire companies really need this fee, or more accurately, tax."

- Washington County

"It's time for Washington County to open new avenues to recycling, specifically junk mail and food cardboard boxes. If the city can provide curb recycling of these items, then why can't the county provide such services at the transfer station? I have been at the transfer station many and people have asked about recycling cereal boxes."

- Hagerstown

"Several people have called in to this column supporting the president and the war in Iraq. Although I initially opposed the war, I am now for it. The president is doing such a great job. To support him I went out and brought two stickers for my truck. The first one has a picture of the flag and the slogan 'these colors don't run' the other one says 'support our troops.' I am supporting our president and feeling very patriotic. If Iran or North Korea wants to fight I say 'bring them on.'"

- Washington County

"I'd like to know if there are any food organizations or restaurants that are willing to donate food that they are not going to use to a very much needed family on a limited income. I'll wait for your reply in Mail Call and may God bless you."

- Hagerstown

"On Good Friday, I went to the St. Paul Cemetery to place flowers on my parents' grave. After eturning home, I left my headlights on on my car. Soon after returning, there was a handsome young man who came to my door and told me and put my headlights off. Thank you so much. You made my day and you saved me from buying a new battery for my car."

- Clear Spring

"First of all, I want to say I hope that Terri is in peace now after her passing in Florida. Secondly, I hope all the young girls will see what losing weight the wrong way can do to you and your body. Please lose weight the right way. I just can't understand why her family or husband didn't talk more about how Terri got in her shape before her heart stopped to help others out there not to lose weight like she did."

- Hagerstown

"Boy it must be nice. Jump on a plane and fly halfway around the world in five hours. Jump back on the plane and fly back. I guess we don't have to worry about the price of gas."

- Franklin County, Pa.

"Are you kidding me? You're going to have people actually call in for deer killing. Do you think they are honestly going to tell you how many deer they shot? They are going to have five or six and tell you one. Why don't you just go ahead and poison the poor animals now and get it over with because probably in about two years they are going to be extinct in Maryland. All to save $50,000. That is chump change."

- Washington County

"As usual DNR is wrong again. They are worried about the animals and the population growth. I personally know somebody that spotlighted a deer and now has its head in the living room. Do you think people are honestly going to say they have one deer? They are going to have 10. It's not going to work."

- Hagerstown

"Terri Schiavo finally passed away. It is such a shame that her family was so selfish that they had to make her suffer all that time."

"To the person who thinks cell phones don't cause accidents. Where do they come from? You can't read the papers or watch the news without seeing how many accidents or near accidents they cause. Please pull off the road if there is something urgent that you need to talk about. Save a life and maybe it could be yours."

- Hagerstown
