Greencastle Borough Council members concerned over bid

April 05, 2005

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The Greencastle Borough Council received only one bid for the reconstruction and resurfacing of South Allison Street and Eastern Avenue.

Valley Quarries Inc. of Chambersburg, Pa., submitted the bid of $897,959.

Council member Jerry Pool said at Monday night's meeting, "That's ridiculous. That's almost $1 million. We built the whole sewer plant for $2.6 million. Does this borough have $1 million to put into that?"

Vice president Harold Duffey suggested asking for a breakdown of the costs.

Nathan Horton, estimator and project manager for Valley Quarries, said it would be "no problem to break the prices out. All the pipe is 10 feet deep minimum, and it's all rock," he added. "We can give justification on the numbers. It's a good bid."

If the council rejects the Valley Quarries' bid, they would have to put the job back out for bids.

The council voted to table acceptance of the bid and invite Valley Quarries to give a breakdown of the bid.
