HANCOCK - Two one-vehicle crashes were reported Wednesday within two miles and three hours of each other near Hancock, and one resulted in the death of a Howard County, Md., man, Maryland State Police said.

Trooper 1st Class R. Care said in a written release that the driver of a Chevrolet Tracker, Daniel Philip Orem, 61, of Halethorpe, Md., died in a 7:38 p.m. crash on westbound Interstate 70 at Hancock.

Care said the Tracker struck a guardrail and overturned and Orem was partially ejected.

Care said Orem was not wearing a seat belt.

Care, the lead investigator on that crash, also investigated a nearby accident at 4:30 p.m.

In that accident, on the I-70 ramp to westbound Interstate 68, a tractor-trailer driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, Sgt. K. D. Scheer said.

The driver, whose identity was not released Wednesday evening, had only minor injuries, Scheer said.

Scheer said the ramp was still closed to traffic at 9:30 p.m., because crews were having a problem removing the rig from the road.
