Mail Call

March 31, 2005

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out. You must include your town or county of residence.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I just wanted to comment on the opinion section of The Sunday Herald-Mail. We used to have an entire section devoted to local opinion, then just half the section and now we only have two pages shoved in the middle of the first section. As a local newspaper, shouldn't The Herald-Mail be open to printing more local columns and letters to the editor?"

"I'm calling in reference to all the selfish parents who were at the City Park egg hunt over the weekend. Once again, my daughter attended for the second year in a row and she didn't get any eggs this time again because all the parents let their children go ahead of time or even helped them out. Once again, thanks for all the selfish people."

- Hagerstown

"I find it rather amusing that people are crying about fuel prices. I think a lot of people in this country take things for granted and they think everything is going to be there for them. Some of these people who are moaning and groaning could stand to maybe ride a bicycle."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Gas in Frederick is only $2.07 a gallon and here in Washington County it's $2.15. It is just not fair. They have to do something about this before it gets out of hand."

- Washington County

"I'd like to comment to the person who called in the item about the Christmas lights on Summit Avenue. We have a service man that has not seen the Christmas lights. I think it's a shame that people have so little to do in their lifetime that they have to bother people that are not hurting a soul. You better think about it a little bit and tend to your own business, please."

- Hagerstown

"Those poor people who are in jail with no personal TV and no phone card and having to turn out the lights at 11 o'clock. We should all be blessed. Living like that gives us peace of mind which is 'real' freedom."

- Washington County

"This is in reference to the County Commissioners' proposed rate hikes for landfill fees. I would like to propose to the County Commissioners that they close the satellite sites that are losing money and then lower the rates to the public by the amount that they are planning to raise them.

- Washington County

"Please don't let them change Memorial Boulevard to Willie Mays Way. Don't let them take that from the World War II veterans. They need that respect."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about my daughter, Angel, and what a wonderful daughter and mother she is. She has had it so rough for the last 10 years and I'm just so glad the way she turned out. She has been through a lot. Now she is a more happy-go-lucky person. She's had diabetes, been in the hospital a couple times and ready to die but she hasn't given up on life and I am so proud of her and I wouldn't trade her for any other daughter in the world."

- Smithsburg

"I would just like to say congratulations to my 4-month-old daughter Alaysia for winning three trophies in the most beautiful baby contest in Baltimore. Love Mom, Dad and big brother Anthony."

"Why is it if heaven is supposed to be so wonderful nobody wants to go and they don't seem to want anybody else to go either? What is the problem?"

"About the sex offenders having to wear a shirt or have a sign on their house, they can get rid of those and tattoo it on their foreheads."

"Is there any information on how to get rid of the mail solicitations that I receive every day? Some I contribute to and many I don't. What's most annoying is the multiple mailings by these organizations."

- Hagerstown

"What I'm calling about is I was just wondering what good it does to have a primary election to determine who will run for each party when the losing candidate can still stage a write-in campaign and be able to run? It seems like such a waste of time to vote in the primary election for that reason."

- Washington County

"This is to the person who called and said that President Bush as governor would not exempt a death-row prisoner in Texas from being executed but was in favor of life in the case of Terri Schiavo. The president is simply trying to punish the criminal and protect the innocent. I pray God will continue to bless this president. He's one of the best we've ever had."

- Hagerstown

"The person who called in about Christmas tree lights being up on Summit Avenue. I wish you would know the amount of people who enjoy those lights and drive by every night just to see them. It's not the same as Christmas, but I tell you, I hope they leave those lights on until next Christmas. They are paying the bill and everybody else should mind their own business about whether they are on or off."

- Hagerstown
