Police chase ends with drug charges

A man charged with drug and traffic offenses following a police chase Sunday was being held Monday at the Washington County Detention Center, a detention center spokeswoman said.

Washington County District Judge Ralph H. France II set bond at $80,000 for Michael T. McElfish Jr., during a bond hearing Monday, court records state.

McElfish was charged with possession of and possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving in excess of reasonable and prudent speed on highway, attempt to elude uniformed police by failing to stop vehicle, attempt to elude uniformed police by fleeing on foot, driving while impaired and driving with unauthorized rider, records state.

The Hagerstown Police Department alleges McElfish drove his motorcycle away from a police cruiser that had its emergency lights activated on South Potomac Street, near Memorial Boulevard, at about 1 a.m.

Police allege McElfish failed to control the motorcycle before falling off and struggled to get away from an officer at the time of his arrest.

Police allege cocaine, marijuana and $4,229 in cash were found on McElfish when he was searched.
