Mail Call

March 24, 2005

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out. You must include your town or county of residence.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"This is to the person who was saying that their daughter was jumped by a woman and she upsets her daughter and she cries. If it's at school, I would contact the principal. If it's not in school, I would contact the local police department and find out what I could do."

- Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

"I just wanted to comment on the parents taking their kids to school. I think it's a good idea because of all the stuff that's going on about somebody trying to pick up kids. If people don't like the people taking their kids to school then they should mind their own business."

- Hagerstown

"This thing about the kids riding the bus or the parents taking them to school or walking to school. Back in the old days, it was safer to walk on the streets but it's not safe anymore. When Potomac Street School was there, you could walk there without being abducted or worried. When I was a teenager, I could walk from the West End to the South End and not have to worry. Nowadays, I wouldn't let my children outside, let alone walk down the street alone. It's just not safe out there with all the perverts you have out there."

"This is for my elderly neighbor across the street. I am so sorry I had to take my tree with the lights and stars down but since it was the first day of spring on Sunday I decided it was time. I know how much you enjoyed it but please remember that next winter is only nine months away."

"We taxpayers have been told that slots would save our schools' financial problems and the roads problems but now the head of Maryland EDC says we can immeasurably improve the financial position of Rocky Gap, which only lost $5.6 million last year. I have a better idea, lower the rates so families in Maryland can use it instead of the politicians, Board of Ed and other CEOs."

- Washington County

"I agree with the caller who said Spanish should be taught at secondary schools only. These kids can barely read and write. They should be learning English and if someone comes to America they should learn English. We shouldn't have to learn their language to make it more convenient for them."

"I hope the firetruck or ambulance never have to get through these parking lots at the end of the day or in the morning when these parents are dropping these kids off. If the bus offers service in your area, then you should be riding the bus. I can see taking your kids to school in bad weather and I wouldn't let them walk in it either but that's why you pay taxes."

"In reference to the person who made the comment about the full page of NASCAR in the paper every Saturday. Apparently, you just started getting the newspaper because that page has been in the paper every Saturday for the last few years during NASCAR season."

"On South Potomac Street on the left there is a commode in the front window of one of the buildings. It's the old electric building. I am told that I cannot put something in my back yard and yet you all can leave it on the main street. I think you all have the problem, not me."

- Hagerstown

"There it is the first step, I told you all I read a little book years ago called '1984.' This is the first step when the governor can tell people what to do with their loved ones. Pretty soon, you won't be able to smoke in your house or walk on the streets without having a pass. This is just the beginning."

"In answer to the person who said that as a Williamsport resident they had nothing to do when they were a child and they lived in Williamsport all their life. So did I, but yes we had things to do because our parents thought of that and we went to the park and played and we did things we were supposed to do because our parents cared and watched us. They didn't tell us to get out the door and go do whatever you want to do."

- Williamsport

"I'd like to help that boy out that wants to go to Cancun and drink some beer but I just don't know where to send the money. If somebody would put that in Mail Call, I'd appreciate that and I can donate a little bit toward it."

- Funkstown

"For the person who wanted to know how to make pudding cakes. Take any cake mix and just add a box of pudding. Don't change anything else in the recipe, just add the pudding and you will have the most moist and delicious cake that you have ever had."

- Morgan County, W.Va.
