A 29-year-old Hagerstown man was stabbed Tuesday just a few feet from a church on West Franklin Street, the Hagerstown Police Department said.

Police said the incident was reported at 4:32 p.m.

According to police, Bernard T. Chavis was stabbed in the lower back during an incident in the 100 block of W. Franklin St.

Police said Chavis and a friend were walking in the area when they encountered three men, exchanged words with them and began to fight. Chavis was knocked off his feet and stabbed while on the ground in the parking lot of Christ Reformed Church, police said.

Sgt. David Long said the injuries that Chavis received were not life-threatening. Long said a motive for the fight and stabbing was unknown Tuesday.

Long said indications were that Chavis did not know the attackers.
