Mail Call

March 23, 2005

"Last week my wife went to apply for a job and I believe she was discriminated against because of her age and I wanted to know if anyone out there can direct me to some help."

- Maugansville

"To the person who said they are ashamed to live in the United States of America. I would like to say that you could always go somewhere else if you don't like it here. I worked overseas for a while and came back home and there is nothing like seeing the American flag and how wonderful this country is."

- Keedysville

"This is for the lady who made the peanut butter fudge at the birthday party and she won some blue ribbons for making this wonderful fudge. Maybe she could share that recipe with us folks in Mail Call."

- Halfway

"To the person who wants to go to Cancun for spring break. He said he has airfare but no money for beer or jet skis. Right away, I clicked at $175. Leave your phone number and I will give it to you."

- Boonsboro

"To those who complained that they couldn't vote for their preference in the recent local election. Call the office of the Board of Elections supervisors and they will gladly explain to you the laws that govern voting. The number is 240-313-2050."

- Hagerstown

"This is about the steroids that some of these professional athletes are taking. I just can't imagine the outrage when they find out that some of these wrestlers in the WWF might be taking steroids."

- Hagerstown

"To the whiner who constantly complains about the Christmas trees and whatever else is in the neighborhood. Why don't you get a job so you don't have time to monitor everybody else's business."

"I'm calling about the parents driving their kids. They need to make their kids walk to school because most kids are obese or overweight."

- Williamsport

"Thank God the Williamsport nightmare is over."

- Williamsport

"There is a reply in your Mail Call that says back in the '70s when there was a gas shortage and the gas never went over $1.50 and now there's no gas shortage and it won't go under $1.50. What is this person buying? Anything that they are buying isn't the same price as it was in 1970, bread, milk, housing, insurance, car payments, price of cars. Tell me if there is anything that you could buy for the same price as it was back in 1970."

- Washington County

"It's my understanding that all people running for city office are supposed to have funds for publicity, put up signs, advertising in the paper. I'm just wondering how much more free advertising is The Herald-Mail going to give the Parson candidate, either in letters to the editor or in the columns that appear. This isn't fair and it isn't right to the other candidates. It's time you put your foot down. Nothing personal, it's just, it isn't fair."

- Hagerstown

"If we allow our County Commissioners to raise our sewer and water rates again and also to raise the landfill rates, something drastic is going to happen. It's getting out of hand and we are going to have to vote everyone out that is in there at the next election. They told us years ago when it went to $105 at the landfill that it would go no higher. Now they are coming up with this water, sewer and landfill rates again."

- Washington County

"I'd like to say that I just moved to Maugans Meadows and I think that the people that walk their dogs ought to carry a bag and clean up after their dogs. People don't want their dogs to do their business in their yard. We've been here three months and I've only seen one woman that actually carries a bag and cleans up after her dog. Everybody else just lets their dog do their business in your yard and keeps on going. It's very rude and I think they should stop it."

- Washington County

"I just wanted to say this suit against Carolyn Motz is one of the dumbest things I've ever read. She's a very classy lady with high moral standards."

- Washington County

"All I want to say is I want to compliment Williamsport for voting for Nelson Deal as a councilman. I worked with him in Little League baseball years ago when we had the Halfway/Williamsport leagues combined. I would say he's one of the best, hardworking and organized men that I've ever known. As far as I know, he is still happening with the Williamsport leagues in Williamsport so they have themselves a gem."

- Halfway

"I just wanted to say to all the soldiers serving in Iraq, please come home and have families so that we can have another baby boom and hopefully when I retire someone will be there to pay for my Social Security."

- Hagerstown

"To the person wanting money for their son when he goes to Cancun. First thing, they don't deserve some if they don't think any more about it than that. Beer money may cut his chances of not coming home at all."

- Sharpsburg
