This week's Feature Home is a great entertainer

March 21, 2005|by MALINDA SHAVER of HomeSource

We are all looking forward to warm weather, and soon the new owners of this week's featured home can anticipate dining in the enclosed gazebo on the multi-layered deck, dipping in the hot tub,and even swimming in the heated free-form in-ground pool. You could get used to this.

You might also get used to the spacious interior. Three finished levels inside offer five bedrooms, three full and two half-baths. On the upper level is a master suite: bedroom 22-by-22 feet, cathedral ceiling, a closet the size of another bedroom, large dormer window seating area, and a luxurious master bath with large tile-enclosed Jacuzzi tub, separate shower and sky light.. Oh, and the bedroom has a convenient wet bar with refrigerator, for late-night snacks or breakfast in bed.

The bedrooms (four on the upper level) are connected by not just a hallway but a bridge, overlooking the great room on one side, and the 22-foot-high entry foyer on the other. This is a spectacular entry, complemented by the proportions of an extra-wide staircase. The openness allows the rooms both upstairs and on the main level to form a continuous, inviting space.

Throughout the home are details such as crown moldings and chair rails. In some rooms, decor builds on tasteful wallpapers. Other spaces feature an artistic faux painting treatment, all professionally coordinated. Formal rooms are carpeted, with ceramic tile in the foyer, kitchen, laundry and baths. Originally a builder's home, attention to detail and thoughtful planning are evident throughout the 7,146 square feet of finished space.

From the foyer extend the formal living room, a hospitable 14-by-18 feet, and the dining room, inviting at 14-by-16 feet. Walk through to the family room to appreciate the two-story brick fireplace, and large gourmet kitchen that any cook will appreciate. Cherry cabinets surround the central island with breakfast counter, and there is a walk-in pantry as well. A half-bath, laundry and utility room are on one side, and a den featuring cherry bookcases occupies the other corner, with windows looking out on the garden.

This house begs to entertain, with the finished lower level sporting a billiard room or home theater, fireplace, sauna, and a walnut wet bar. Taking care of practicalities, a utility room even sports a dog entrance to the fenced rear yard.

Also on the practical side, an attached two-car garage is supplemented by a separate storage shed. The exterior of the house is brick and siding. A brick patio and steps lead to the lower level pool, all surrounded by a terraced perennial garden. The entire property totals over two acres.

Nearby routes make Smithsburg and Hagerstown an easy trip, yet the setting is distinctly pastoral, in a rolling valley with views of the Blue Ridge foothills that will soon be in full bloom with spring.
