Post office under construction

A new branch of the Hagerstown Post Office will serve customers in the city's north end after its scheduled opening later this year, the Hagerstown postmaster said this week.

The Northern Station of the Hagerstown Post Office is under construction off Leitersburg Pike near the Long Meadow Shopping Center in Hagerstown. It will serve the 21742 ZIP code, Hagerstown Postmaster Richard Sheffield said.

The 21742 ZIP code includes some sections of the City of Hagerstown north of downtown, and reaches beyond the city limits to the Pennsylvania state line.

Construction on the new office is scheduled to finish in August, with service beginning sometime after that, Sheffield said. He said the office could open as early as September, depending on when construction is complete. He said he hopes to have it open for the holiday season.

The 18,000-square-foot building will be staffed by about 30 to 35 postal employees, and the station is expected to handle 15,000 daily deliveries, Sheffield said.

The station also will have a postal store, a 24-hour lobby with a vending area and more than 20 parking spaces, Sheffield said.

In addition to freeing up space inside the downtown office, the new station will help ease parking problems existing at the downtown office on West Franklin Street.

James Bender, an engineer for the City of Hagerstown, said the post office's address will be 12912 Conamar Drive.
