Former Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II filed paperwork Friday, making his write-in candidacy official for an attempt at re-election to the office.
Bruchey announced Thursday that he would file as a write-in candidate. In the March 8 Republican primary, Bruchey lost his bid to be nominated as the party's official candidate in the May 17 general election.
Bruchey was mayor from 1997 to 2001, when he lost to incumbent Mayor William M. Breichner.
The Republican nominee for mayor is Richard F. Trump. Breichner is the Democratic nominee.
Bruchey becomes the second write-in candidate in this year's city elections, which also puts the five City Council seats up for grabs.
Merrill "E.J." E. Fuller Jr., a Republican, filed in February as a write-in candidate for City Council.
Candidates who wish to run a write-in campaign must file documents with the Washington County Board of Elections by May 11.
