Candidate withdraws name from Democratic ticket

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert Helman on Thursday submitted a request to have his name withdrawn as a Democratic candidate for the Region One seat on the Chambersburg Area School Board.

Franklin County Deputy Chief Clerk Jean Byers said Helman brought the letter in to the Election Board and a copy was delivered to Common Pleas Court Judge Carol Van Horn.

Helman, an incumbent school board member, is still a candidate for the Republican nomination in the May 17 primary. He is opposed for the GOP nomination by Paul Ambrose, who also cross-filed to run for the Democratic nomination.

On Tuesday, the deadline to file court challenges to nominating petitions, Marlin Wagner of Chambersburg filed a challenge to Helman's Democratic petition, claiming the candidate, a registered Republican, circulated the petition. According to Pennsylvania Election law, school board candidates can run in both party primaries, but someone from the other party must circulate the petition on their behalf.

Helman said Tuesday he circulated the petition, although a registered Democrat, Doug Harbach, signed the document as the circulator.

The deadline for candidates to withdraw their names from the primary ballot is Wednesday, March 23, Byers said.
