Mail Call

March 17, 2005

"Could someone call and put in the recipe for chocolate pudding cake? Thank you"

"They talk about how Social Security needs help. Well, raising the minimum wage would have done it because large corporations would have to pay more into it."

- Hagerstown

"The nurses and the doctors offices do not get enough credit for the extra things they do. A nurse at my doctor's office is a good example of how they go out of their way to help the patients. So tell them what a good job they're doing the next time you go to your doctor."

- Washington County

"I'm calling about the person who wrote in about the kids walking to school or the parents driving them and I have a 10-year-old son. He's going to be 11 next year in sixth grade and I live in Williamsport and that is a really long walk for an 11-year-old, especially when it's raining or snowing. I can tell you right now that next year I will be driving my son to school and if you have a problem with that, then take it up with the Board of Education about getting buses and driving them to school."

"In regards to the yard sale holders, I think it's very unfair for them to advertise that they are going to have a yard sale on a certain day at a certain time and then you drive miles and get there and then they tell you that they've sold most of their items the day before."

"I'm calling to congratulate the new mayor in Williamsport and Jeff Kline and Nelson Deal, congratulations, you guys. What Williamsport really needs is a skateboard place that these kids can go to with their skateboards."

- Williamsport

"Back in the '70s when there was a gas shortage, the gas never went over $1.50 a gallon and now there is no gas shortage and it won't go under $1.50."

- Hagerstown

"I live just west of Hagerstown and I just saw my first robin of 2005 and this just made my day because I know spring is around the corner."

"I would like to call and wish congratulations to Alesia Parson on her recent Democratic nomination victory. We are so proud of you and keep up the good fight."

- Hagerstown

"If we are to believe George Bush, the war in Iraq is over. If that's the case, why are men and women in our fighting services still dying over there? Something is not right here."

"I'm calling about the person wondering why parents drive their children to school. There are two magnet programs at two schools in the area and if you are not in the district, the parents obviously have to drive the children to that school."

- Hagerstown

"To the person who found the change purse in the area out by Target, please call 301-733-1846."

- Hagerstown

"How long is the state of Maryland going to drain money from the people's taxes to subsidize Rocky Gap? Maryland citizens, please speak up."

- Allegany County, Md.

"My husband and I are in our late 70s and retired for about 15 years. We always lived on a tight budget and when IRAs became available we invested in IRAs and now the IRAs make the difference between having a little house on a nice piece of property or living in a trailer in a trailer park. I think everybody should have the same opportunity that the government employees have to invest part of their retirement and part of their Social Security (in) stocks."

- Morgan County, W.Va.

"I would just like to say that my wife and I ate dinner at a restaurant downtown called The Plum and we misplaced our car keys. The dishwasher, Bill, helped us find them and was most courteous during our time of stress. I'd also like to say that these were the cleanest dishes we'd ever eaten off of."

"I think that since we have seen the paper publish the salary of the employees for the Board of Education, city and county, I think the taxpayers of this county deserve to know what, if (anything), these employees are paying for their benefits, especially medical insurance. Employees in the private sector are having their medical costs increased greatly and also our taxes. I think we need to see more than what we are paying for salaries. I think that benefits are a great part of a salary package and I think we deserve the right to see exactly what they are paying for their benefits."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the person who made a comment about the parents taking their children to school. First off, I am one of those mothers taking their children to school because there are no buses that come in town. If you live in town limits, the bus does not come pick you up and if you have a 7-year-old child, you don't want them walking seven blocks. I also have a high school student and also another middle school student and I take them to school as well. Not only just because of the bus, but it's not safe anymore. Look at all these things that are happening today. If you were any concerned parent, I'm sure you would not want your child walking seven blocks when it's snowing or raining."

- Williamsport

"John Slayman, I would like to say you did a very good job when you were in there as mayor."

- Williamsport
