Area Roundup - Scherpf helps Rams women earn sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Julie Scherpf had four hits and drove in five runs to lead Shepherd University to wins over Skidmore and Central Methodist on Tuesday at the Snowbird Tournament.

Scherpf had two hits and three RBI to pace the Rams in a 4-1 win over Skidmore. Jenn Canby and Jamie Griffin added two hits each and Shannon Leighty allowed four hits over 6 1/3 innings to notch her first win of the season.

Scherpf went 2-for-3 with two RBI to help Shepherd edge Central Methodist, 5-4. Griffin and Brooke Small each had two hits and Mia Zappacosta pitched a complete game for the Rams (4-5), who held on for the win despite five fielding errors.


Shepherd 7-1, Wingate 1-7

WINGATE, N.C. - Scott Koscielniak scattered two hits over seven innings and Shepherd University used an explosive fifth inning to win the opening game of a doubleheader against Wingate University.


Shepherd scored all seven of its runs in the fifth.

Matt Noll led the Rams with four hits, while Ryan Brady and Nicky Brown each added two. Brady drove in two runs.

Josh Benton allowed five hits over six innings while going 3-for-3 at the plate to help Wingate (11-19) take the nightcap.

Ryan Harju had two hits for the Rams (4-6). Brady scored the lone run on an RBI single by Phillip Powell in the second.


SJPH 22, Beth Tfiloh 5

BALTIMORE - Rachel Miller had four hits, including a home run, while pitching a complete game with 11 strikeouts to lead St. John's at Prospect Hall to a victory over Beth Tfiloh (0-1, 0-1) in the IAAM Conference opener.

Rachel Smith added four hits, including a home run, for the Vikings (1-0, 1-0) while Kate Kersey and Michelle Friend each added three hits.


SJPH 11, Chapelgate 6

FREDERICK, Md. - Mike McCurdy had five goals and four assists - including four scores and two assists in a seven-goal run - to lead St. John's-Prospect Hall to a season-opening victory over Chapelgate Christian Academy.

Chapelgate Christian tied the score 4-4 midway through the second quarter before the Vikings (1-0) started their seven-goal onslaught. McCurdy had a goal and an assist to end the half to give St. John's a 6-4 lead at the intermission.

Matt Harraka scored two goals for St. John's while Kevin Callaghan, Tyler Catalani, Korin Pierce and Sam Weaver each had one goal. Kevin Shaffer had an assist.


Suns looks for promo crew

The Hagerstown Suns are looking for people with creativity and enthusiasm to be part of the team's promotions crew.

Members will be called on to entertain fans throughout the game by organizing contests and acting in on-field skits, mostly between innings.
