Local roundup - Rams sweep Barton

COLLEGE SOFTBALL



MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Shepherd University won its first two games of the season Monday, sweeping Barton College 3-2 and 4-0 in a Snowbird Tournament doubleheader.

In the first game, the Rams (2-5) scored three runs in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Cara Wacker led off with a double, Julie Scherpf singled and both scored as Jamie Griffin reached base on a three-base error. April Przygocki scored Griffin on a groundout.

Karen Burnette (1-2) pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Shepherd in the second game. Bridget Merceruio hit a two-run homer and Megan Zahnow had an RBI triple for the Rams.




COLLEGE BASEBALL



Wingate 8, Shepherd 7


WINGATE, N.C. - Wingate University (10-18) came back from a 7-1 deficit, scoring five runs in the eighth inning and two to win it in the ninth against Shepherd University.

For the Rams (3-5), Collin Brown was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Joe Cook went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Josh Bowers was 2-for-5 with an RBI.




MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL



Boonsboro wins title


Shane Zbir had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Boonsboro to a 44-28 victory over Smithsburg for the Washington County eighth-grade title.

Seth Poffenberger had 15 points for Boonsboro, while Shane Lowery scored 13.

Josh Conway had 10 points for Smithsburg.




BRIEF



District I hosts umpiring clinic


A free training clinic for District I Little League umpires, managers and coaches will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at National Little League field.

The clinic will cover rules along with umpire positioning and technique.
