Local roundup - Hawks soar home on six-game roll

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Hagerstown Community College finished a week-long road trip Thursday with close victories against Kalamazoo Valley and Deleware Tech to wrap up the Cocoa Expo on a six-game winning streak.

Andy Taylor pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts as HCC (7-3) blanked Kalamazoo Valley, 2-0. Drew Counselman had two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth. Kyle Robinson added two hits and Matt Tedrick also had an RBI single.

Hagerstown used a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth to edge Deleware Tech, 2-1. Lowell Coates led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Nathan Himes, whose bunt down the first-base line allowed Coates to score the winning run.

Alex Miranda pitched seven solid innings, surrendering just one run and five hits while striking out eight before giving way to Hugh Wescott, who pitched a perfect eighth for the win. Counselman had two hits.



Pine wins first match at states

HERSHEY, Pa. - James Buchanan junior Justin Pine won a 3-2 decision over Forest Hills' Sean Kisel (41-4) in their first-round bout at 189 pounds at the PIAA Class AA state tournament.

Pine (29-6) faces Curwensville's Nick Sipes (28-0) in the quarterfinals.


Davis scores 13 for S.C. State

RICHMOND, Va. - Derrick Davis, a St. Maria Goretti graduate, scored 13 points to help South Carolina State defeat Norfolk State in the quarterfinals of the Mid-East Athletic Conference Tournament, 76-59.

Davis went 5-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from the Line for S.C. State (19-11), which meets Delaware State today at 2:30 in the tournament semifinals.


Area foursome named all-academic

Of the 18 McDaniel College student-athletes recently named to the Centennial Conference's Winter Academic Honor Roll, four are graduates of area high schools.

Senior Brooke Weimer (Williamsport) and sophomore Katy Powell (Smithsburg) were members of McDaniel's conference champion women's basketball team, while sophomore Matt Rouse (Williamsport) and junior Kelly Gruber (Walkersville) competed on the men's and women's indoor track teams.

Basket bingo for Hubs

Funkstown Fire Hall will host an afternoon of basket bingo to benefit the North Hagerstown baseball team on Sunday.

It will consist of 20 games. Doors will open at 11 a.m. with play beginning at 1 p.m. Tickets are $15.
