Hot industry convenes Home Show

The weather in Washington County might be cool, but the local home construction industry is hot. So hot, all booth space is taken at Home Show 2005, the 20th annual exhibition hosted by the Home Builders Association of Washington County.

"We are actually sold out. The first time that's happened, even after adding more booths," said Debi Turpin, the association's executive director. "It amazes me the variety of people we've heard from."

Home Show 2005 will be held this weekend at the Athletic Recreational and Community Center at Hagers-town Community College, on Hagerstown's east side.

More than 200 vendors will show their products and services Saturday, March 12, and Sunday, March 13. Vendors range from interior decorators to home designers to spa installers to home security specialists.

"This is a home show geared toward everyone, whether they live in an apartment or house," Turpin said. "For all different pha-=ses - from home decorating ideas along to custom-building a house."

The public is invited; the admission is a requested $2 donation to HCC's athletic booster club. Ages 12 and younger are admitted free.

Children are especially welcome at the show, according to Turpin. A children's area will be set up with a variety of free activities.

"We want the parents to be there with their kids," she said. "There will be Lowe's kids' clinics. Kids can build a wood project at 10 and 2 each day, (making) different projects each time. And there'll be face painting, sand art, coloring."

Adults also can have fun. Free clinics are scheduled both days for show attendees. Topics include bathroom remodeling; choosing doors and windows; kitchen remodeling projects; a walk through the county's building permit process; a primer on reverse mortgages; and a talk about becoming a crane operator.
