Construction on parking deck to begin

March 10, 2005|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

Construction crews are to begin work on Hagerstown's new parking deck today, although the $3.1 million garage will not open until sometime next year.

City officials have said they consider the five-story, 202-space garage to be integral to boosting downtown business.

The deck will be on the block surrounded by East Washington, South Locust, East Antietam and South Potomac streets, but will not face any of those streets. It will be behind a South Potomac Street project being orchestrated by The Bowman Group, which plans to provide residential, restaurant and office space.

The work to begin today will cause the closure of part of an alley on that block, said James Bender, a city engineer. The alley runs parallel to South Potomac Street.

Bender said residents likely will not see above-ground progress for several months. The portion of work to begin today is the work on the foundation.

The foundation was a problematic part of the parking deck's design, which became more costly when engineers discovered the ground was not stable enough to support a less expensive design.

Bender said the alley would be closed for several months, and likely will be closed on and off throughout the construction project.
