March 07, 2005|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

A man who had been living at a Hagerstown hotel continues to be held at a Baltimore medical center more than one week after sustaining burns to more than 40 percent of his body during a fire there.

Stephen Ropelewski was listed in critical condition Sunday evening at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, a spokeswoman said.

Ropelewski sustained second- and third-degree burns in the Feb. 26 fire at the Dagmar Hotel.

Approximately 50 Washington County firefighters, rescue workers and police officers responded to the scene. The firefighters contained the blaze to one room on the sixth floor of the hotel.

The Hagerstown Fire Department said Sunday that the cause of the fire had not been released.
