CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Zullinger, Pa., man charged with criminal homicide in the November death of his infant son has had his case continued until May, according to Franklin County Court records.

Shane Michael Barrett, formerly of 5261 Buchanan Trail East, was charged Nov. 22 in the death of his 3-month-old son, Kaden Michael Barrett, who was declared dead four days earlier at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. The father also is charged by Washington Township police with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The cause of death was battered child syndrome, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner.

Public Defender Michael D. Toms requested the continuance because more time was needed to prepare the defense's case, according to court records.

Police allege Barrett tossed the child face-down to the floor from knee level on the afternoon of Nov. 17, and that the child suffered other injuries in the days leading up to his death.

Shane Barrett originally told police he dropped the child while changing a diaper and also that he earlier had tripped while carrying the baby, according to police records.

A physician at Hershey later told the investigating officer that "the injuries sustained by Kaden Michael Barrett were not consistent with the version of events provided by Shane Michael Barrett," according to the affidavit of probable cause.
