Council members concerned about serving alcohol at cook-off

The Hagerstown City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to allow the Community Free Clinic to use Fairgrounds Park for a Chili Cook-Off on Sept. 24.

City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman said details, including hours of the event, fencing and other logistics, would be addressed at a later date.

Several council members, including Lewis C. Metzner and N. Linn Hendershot, voiced concerns about having alcohol at the park, which the free clinic has requested.

Metzner said the issue had been discussed during a previous, unofficial request by a promoter to stage a KIX reunion concert there. An official request had not been submitted by Tuesday for that event.

"I don't see Fairgrounds Park as a place to hold hard rock concerts with alcohol," Metzner said.

Hendershot said the belief that beer was needed for the cook-off to be successful was "sad."

Council members said the cook-off possibly could serve as a test case after a policy governing such events at city parks is worked out.
