Bloodmobiles listed

March 02, 2005

Winter storms and widespread outbreaks of colds and flu have resulted in canceled bloodmobiles and blood donation appointments, prompting the Greater Alleghenies Region of American Red Cross Blood Services to launch an emergency appeal for blood donors.

On Tuesday, regional supplies of type O-Negative blood were at half a day's supply, according to a press release from the Red Cross. The region also is down to a day and a half supply of most other blood types, despite importing 752 blood products from other Red Cross blood centers during February.

A week's supply in all blood types is desired.

Individuals age 17 years or older, who weigh at least 105 pounds and are in generally good health, may be able to donate blood. Those with specific eligibility questions may call the Red Cross toll-free at 800-542-5663.
