Hotel complex planned near Valley Mall

Two hotels are planned for 2.15 acres off Halfway Boulevard near Valley Mall, according to Washington County planning documents.

The hotel complex would consist of SpringHill Suites by Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott.

Developer Peter Plamondon Jr., co-president of The Plamondon Companies in Frederick, Md., said Monday the property was an attractive site for the hotels because of its location near Interstate 81 and major Washington County employers along the highway.

"So, we're excited about bringing the first Marriott hotel to Washington County," Plamondon said.

Access to the property, known as Valley World, is off the Valley Mall parking lot near Toys R Us, according to planning documents. The site had been used for an outdoor recreational vehicle storage lot, the documents say.

The Plamondon Companies is developing a partnership with Randy Cohen, the property's owner, to open the hotels, Plamondon said.

The business owns and operates three Marriott franchise hotels in Frederick, he said.

Ground is tentatively set to be broken for SpringHill Suites by late summer, and work is expected to be completed by the middle of 2006, Plamondon said.

The hotel would have more than rooms.

Plamondon said an exact number of rooms for Courtyard has not yet been determined, but that it probably would have between 90 and 100 rooms.

That hotel would be built after SpringHill Suites opens, he said.

"We look forward to providing superior hospitality to the people who visit Washington County either for business or pleasure," Plamondon said.

Plamondon said it's possible a restaurant also might be built on the property, but those talks are in preliminary stages.
