Mail Call for 2-16

February 16, 2005

"A nice article in Monday's paper about the hospital advice help line. I was interested enough that I was going to call it but you neglected to do one important thing, you forgot to put the phone number in there. It's not in the phone book. So someone messed up and needs to put the phone number for the hospital's advice help line in the paper."

- Hagerstown

(Editor's note - The phone number was inadvertently cut from the bottom of the story in Monday's Daily Mail. The phone number for Washington County Hospital's toll-free Advice Line is 800-274-0499.)

"Congratulations to the Hagerstown Community College Student Government Association officers for coming up with the great idea of a Valentine's Day dinner/dance bringing senior citizens, the community and young people all together. Thanks for a wonderful and memorable evening."

- Hagerstown

"For the ladies who work at Smithsburg Elementary School, Angel and Chris, you do a great job with the kids. My daughter always comes home and says how nice you two are. Keep up the great work."

"Tara Reilly's article on Feb. 12 regarding Hancock's recent election appears to be symptomatic of their problems as council members. During their term in office, they appeared to continue to oppose measures brought to the council by residents providing support or offering alternatives. Evidently, the great majority of voters felt neither of those two council members had enough to continue them in office. Trying to place blame on Younker who is an honest and trustworthy person is a disgrace and a cop- out."

"For the people out who keep talking about the union costing the tannery workers' jobs. Let me tell you something, if it weren't for unions in this country we would have children, not going to school, but working 12 to 18 hours a day. Read your history, people. You are totally uneducated."

- Washington County

"To the people who are bashing the unions. Tell me, what kind of house are you going to buy when they sell for more than $300,000 when you are making $5 an hour? Apartments are going from $700 to $1,000 a month."

- Washington County

"My car registration came due. My car and my truck, both due in March. The car, a Dodge van, is now $180. My truck is $154. I am retired and on a fixed income. Oh, I know you are tired of hearing this, but these are facts. That is $334 in March that I have to come up with. Someone needs to petition against these legislators who think up these laws and then the poor people have to pay through the nose."

"To Mr. Snook, I suggest you ride down through southern Washington County. Go slow because our crumbling roads may damage your vehicle. As you travel, look into the fields where cows used to graze and corn grew tall - now filled up with homes, field after field. Soon there will not be any fields left to be found. Cows never crowded our schools, stores or restaurants and never caused our taxes to go sky high."

- Washington County

"I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a copy of the tape for the new show on the Fox channel called '24.' It's on Mondays at 9 p.m. I just got hooked on it but I missed the first ones that came out."

- Washington County

"Someone called and asked what they were building next to the Outback Steakhouse. It's a new restaurant called Buffalo Wild Wings. It's a sports bar, restaurant with lots of finger foods, etc. It is reasonably priced and is a great restaurant and sports bar for people who just want to watch a game and have a drink. It is expected to open up in the middle of May."

"I can't believe the laziness of some people at these shopping centers and stores. With a few extra steps you could put your cart in the cart area or back in front of the store. But I have seen people leave the carts out in the middle of the parking lot so they could roll and hit people's cars. Stop being lazy and put the carts away."

- Hagerstown

"I want to say thanks to the Washington County Free Library staff. They are always friendly, courteous and very helpful. They are all doing a great job and deserve a big thank you."

- Hagerstown

"I want to comment about Holly Place. I would be willing to wager that if everyone in Hagerstown who smokes would donate one month's worth of what cigarettes cost and donate it to Holly Place then I bet they could stay open for a long time."

- Hagerstown

"About gas prices. The national gas average per gallon just went up to $1.91 a gallon. Why has Hagerstown been $1.95 for over a month now? I just bought gas in Frederick on U.S. 40 for $1.79. Almost every gas station on U.S. 40 in Frederick is $1.79."

- Hagerstown

"Last week at Wal-Mart I left my purse in my cart in the parking lot. I just wanted to thank the lady who found it and turned it in to customer service. Thank you and God bless you."
