Mail Call

February 16, 2005

"Please don't close Holly Place. I may need to go there one day."

- Hagerstown

"To the person who called in and said that the people at the tannery are losing their jobs because they did it to themselves when they went on strike because they wanted more money and benefits. You are totally wrong. Some of us took a pay cut by as much as $2 to $5 an hour. So get your facts straight before you start knocking us."

- Washington County

"I think it's bad that the city and county can't help these people at Holly Place. These people don't have families and can't get help. But they will help the younger people who can still work."

- Washington County

"To the person in last Wednesday's paper who wanted addresses for the troops in Iraq. If you have access to the Internet, go to www.anysoldier.com. You will be able to see some of the videos made of what they are really doing in Iraq."

"I am reading about these schools talking about the Alternative School and which school it should go to. Well, I think that they should go back to the paddle in the schools because the parents don't seem to be correcting their children the right way. It didn't hurt me or the other kids when we went to school and we all turned out right."

- Washington County

"I am watching on the bottom of the screen on Channel 14. It says 1,600 and some killed since the Iraq war started. I wish that Bush and everyone would start telling the truth. Tell everyone exactly how many were killed and how many are injured."

"I am calling about the remarks made about the prisoner on the bus being killed. When was prison supposed to be a safe place? Maybe this will stop some of these people from doing things to be sent to jail."

- Hagerstown

"Regarding the person who said Holly Place waited until the last minute to seek help with funds. Last year, those people put an article in the paper requesting help. Back then, it was far less than what they need now. I really think we all need to ban together to help these people. Those elderly people worked their entire lives and now it's time that we pay them back. We need to pull together and help these people."

- Washington County

"I was at the hospital this past weekend. I think that the security guards are doing a great job. They don't get the recognition they deserve. Two thumbs up for the security guards at Washington County Hospital."

- Hagerstown

"I am calling about the articles I have been reading about the inmates and having TVs. Those TVs are bought by relatives who have inmates in prison. They aren't paid for by you."

- Washington County

"The only way the union is responsible for the tannery's closing was its support of Clinton. He worked 11 months to get enough votes to pass it. Of course, Bush isn't any better. He had four years to put a stop to it, but he didn't. So put the blame where it belongs."

- Washington County

"My name is James and I called the Hagerstown Fire Department at 301-739-8577, ext. 415. I called them about 6 p.m. and told them that I had no smoke detectors in my house. I had one that was 15 years old and they came over within 45 minutes and replaced two detectors free of charge. I wish everyone would call them and tell them they need detectors and they will replace them. I am really satisfied with the Hagerstown Fire Department."

- Hagerstown

"What they are building behind the Outback Steakhouse is just another place to stuff your face."

- Fairplay

"Tim Rowland is the greatest."

"I am fascinated by the person who called and tells us to get over it because Bush won and he is going to be president for the next four years, so I should grow up and go on to support him, because he thinks Bush is doing a great job. Give me a break. As an American citizen, I will speak out against him because I think he is the wrong man for the job. I didn't vote for him and I don't support him. I am American. I have that right. So if you want me to grow up, I have."

- Sharpsburg

"I am concerned about Holly Place. Why did all the big shots at Holly Place wait until the last minute to ask for help when all the people are in trouble? I wish I was younger and had a family and a place for my family to come home to."

- Hagerstown

"In reference to the Social Security topic on the opinion page. According to my history, Social Security was meant to be a temporary remedy to the needs of the country. It has become a retirement package for a lot of people. If this is so, why not take some of that money and invest it where we could get a better return as opposed to leaving it in the hands of the government and only getting a minimal return?"
