Mail Call

February 15, 2005

"I just read an article in the paper where the Massey family has donated the parking lot to the library. They gave it to them. But what I was wondering, is it still going to be free parking on that lot?"

- Hagerstown

"I don't know, is anyone else tired of hearing about Michael Jackson, the pope, Prince Charles, Scott Peterson and all the other nonsense they throw out at you in the so-called news. How about some real news? There are a lot of things going on in this world. I don't care who J-Lo is marrying or if Brad Pitt is getting a divorce. It's irrelevant, people."

- Washington County

"For my sweetheart, Frankie, from Brenda. I hope you can come home on Valentine's Day. I love you."

- Washington County

"About the terrible rumors that were started against Mayor O'Malley and his family. He is Catholic, they have four children, happily married. But the conservative right, supposedly fueled by religious people, started these terrible lies about him and his family in order to try to connect him to our previous governor. Just ugly, dirty and terrible lies and I hope it backfires in everybody's face."

"The Washington County Commissioners are asking the legislators to let them add thousands of dollars more to the cost of a home on top of already burdensome taxes and fees. Our public officials don't seem to understand that when they artificially increase the cost of new housing, declare moratoriums and propose many estates that can only be afforded by the wealthy, they drive up assessments and taxes for everyone. Their actions are a triple blow to the American dream of owning your own home."

- Washington County

"I want to reply to the mayor of Hancock's comment in the paper. I work at Prowler in Hancock and instead of the mayor worrying about what he is going to do to Hancock, I wonder if he shouldn't wonder what its going to do to the people working at Prowler. I am 50 years old. Where do you go to get a job when you are 50 years old?"

- Hancock

"I am calling about the tax assessments and someone saying that the property taxes are rising as much as 60 percent and that people can't afford to buy houses. Not only that, because of the property taxes rising so much to people renting houses, they are raising the rent so high, they can't even afford to rent a house let alone buy a home. Single moms, with kids that make too much money, can't get onto the subsidizing housing."

- Hagerstown

"It's a shame what they are doing to those poor people at Holly Place. I was wondering if the County Commissioners and the Gaming Commission couldn't get together and maybe come up with a plan to use the money from the tip jars to help save Holly Place."

- Williamsport

"I just have a simple question for the County Commissioners in light of the high tax assessments. When was the last time you people ever considered cutting property tax costs?"

- Maugansville

"I just wanted to know when the Sheriff's Department or the state police are going to crack down on the high speed racing up and down Sunset Avenue in Williamsport? It happens in the mornings and evenings. What are they going to do, wait until someone gets killed or wait until a child gets killed? It's mostly all the four-wheel drive trucks."

- Williamsport

"To the people who keep calling about the $300,000 houses in the heart of Hagers-town and said that the drug dealers would get them. Just to let you know, the drug dealers are all over Hagerstown, even right next door to you."

"I love this column, I wanted to say a big thank you to the school bus drivers who will pull over on U.S. 40 in the mornings and afternoons after making several stops so they don't hold up the traffic."

- Myersville, Md.

"In regard to the city and state workers doing scratch-off's in a store while on duty. Get a life, you know they do have a break time or lunch time."

"North High's class of 1980 will hold the 25-year reunion on Aug. 13, at the Northern Avenue American Legion. For more information, call Robin at 301-739-0028 or Doug at 301-714-0354."

- Hagerstown

"I wanted to thank the young couple who helped me on the Dual Highway when my car broke down. They let me use their cell phone to call for help. I guess they were the two angels that God sent for me when I was in need. Thanks again and God bless you both."

"Shame on you county, maybe the people in Holly Place want a better life. They should go and commit a crime. Then they would help them."

"I wanted to comment on the comments about the inmates being murdered. I think it's disgusting that they are taking up for these people. They are the ones who are in there for murder, rape, robbery and all those kinds of illegal stuff and they say the guards are the ones that should be in trouble. NO WAY."

- Hagerstown

"I wanted to comment about Holly Place. I think it's a shame that seniors are the ones who built this country and the nursing homes in it."

- Washington County
