Mail Call

February 14, 2005

"Charley Reese's column on Jan. 29 was one of his best. It was titled 'The Filth We Breed' regarding the coarsening and vulgarizing of magazines, newspapers and television shows, and what we have to look forward to."

"In regards to the person who called in about the doctors' malpractice increase. Their insurance is going up 100 percent a year. Keep in mind, if this continues and all of the doctors leave, who will be at the emergency room if something would happen to you? Doctors are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They don't work 9 to 5 and have weekends off. They make major sacrifices to be there for their patients. Patients need to support their doctors so they can continue to save more lives."

- Hagerstown

"To the caller who thinks it's a slap in the face that inmates are allowed their own private TV sets and not working. I was an inmate at MCI, MCTC and RCI and I can tell you this: inmates who have their own TV sets do work inside the prison walls. They don't lie around all day and watch TV. How else do you think they can afford their TV sets?"

- Hedgesville, W.Va.

"What are they building beside the Outback Steakhouse restaurant?"

- Washington County

"Concerning the president's State of the Union address: He said the troops were dying for freedom of this country. They are dying for those other countries. I don't think they should be over there dying for freedom for another country."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Reading the paper, I wish the reporters who write up the stories about these shootings would think of a little compassion for the family of the victims."

- Washington County

"You know everyone keeps talking about President Bush. Get over it, people. He is going to be president for the next four years. Grow up, go and just support him. I think he has done a wonderful job."

"About plastic surgery. I watched Oprah Winfrey the other day and those women were pretty before. I also watched Dr. Phil. Women are worried about being pretty. Why can't they be satisfied with what God gave them? It's inner peace, not external beauty."

"I am reading in the paper an article about the elections in Iraq and the count being delayed because of the irregularities in the voting boxes. Sounds like Florida, doesn't it?"

"I am calling about all the money the County Commissioners have for their raises. Think about the retired people who are living on a fixed income and haven't had a cost-of-living increase in years."

Clear Spring

"We are going through Public Square in Hagerstown and I was just wondering what happened to the noise ordinance law about radios. We had our windows wound up all the way and we could hear the music in the car behind us like it would have been on in our own car. I was just wondering if there was still a law."

- Washington County

"I want to make a plea on behalf of those lovely people at Holly Place. I am sure that most of us could get something to help these people. Jump on board and help them. We always help people with a disaster, so why can't we help them? Imagine going to bed one night and wondering where you will be staying the next day."

- Washington County

"I want to comment on the person who called in about the happy birthdays and congratulations and why can't they send them a card. I agree, it's only 37 cents. Why take up the room in this column? Give us a break."

- Hagerstown

"In reference to the call in Wednesday's papers about someone saying they know people who didn't work and never paid a penny into Social Security and they wanted to know who those kind of people were. Well, it's anyone who comes over here from a foreign country, establishes a business and has a job, and then brings their parents over here after being established here and takes care of them for three years and if they are 65 or older, they can draw Social Security and they never paid a penny into it. I know this is not right, but that is the way it is."

- Washington County

"I want to congratulate Brianne Kretzer for making the distinguished honor roll at Grace Academy. Congratulations and way to go, girl. From your Pappy and Grammy."

"If I had a dime for every time I was called a racist this week just because I had a Confederate flag on my truck, I could pay the truck off. People need to learn that just because you have a rebel flag on your vehicle doesn't mean that you are a racist or a KKK member."

- Hagerstown

"A great big thank you to the newspaper delivery guy who helped my son last Friday afternoon on Greencastle Pike when the load of shingles knocked him off the roof. Call me at 301-766-9146 so I can thank you properly. Thank God you were near and could help him."
