Man sentenced to 30 years for rape


FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - A New York man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for his role in the rapes of two women after tying up their boyfriends at a Buckeystown bed-and-breakfast.

James Gorham pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree sex offense in Frederick County Circuit Court. In return for his pleas, prosecutors dropped multiple charges of rape, sex offense, false imprisonment, theft and other offenses.

Gorham was the second of two men charged in the April 14, 2002, incident at a cottage at the Catoctin Inn. His uncle, Frederick Jo Vaughn, was sentenced Jan. 4 to four consecutive life terms after a jury convicted him in February.




Cumberland man charged in killing


CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - A Cumberland man was ordered held without bail Monday on murder charges stemming from the death of a 78-year-old resident.

Mark David Preston, 40, is charged with first- and second-degree murder, assault, burglary, theft and robbery. He was arrested Friday night, hours after the body of Carl A. Natale was found by a friend lying on the living room floor of his South Cumberland home, police said.
