Goretti boys rally, but fall short in BCL loss

No. 4 St. Maria Goretti fell behind 16-2 to start the game, then rallied to take the lead in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell short in a 62-57 loss to Archbishop Spalding on Sunday in a Baltimore Catholic League game at the Gael Center.

The Gaels (16-9, 5-6) held a two-point lead with about 90 seconds to play, but an offensive foul and a miss on the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity allowed Spalding (18-9, 5-6) to reclaim the lead and edge Goretti.

Joe Spierenburg had 14 points and Gene Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds for Goretti. Tim Kellinger had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, while Tim Alexander added seven rebounds.


Averett 58, Hood 56

DANVILLE, Pa. - Averett University made 10 of 16 3-point attempts to edge Hood College.

South Hagerstown graduate Jesse Gutekunst scored a team-high 21 points and Santo Provenzano added 17 for the Blazers.



Blue Storm boys third

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Griffin Burns won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 42 seconds as the Mercersburg Academy boys placed third in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Championships at Lawrenceville School on Saturday.

Josh Light scored in three events for the Blue Storm, finishing third in the 55 and sixth in both the 200 and the long jump.

Quintez McDonald-Gibson was second in the 55, Gunner Coil was second in the high jump and Ronnie Johnson finished fourth in the shot put.

Mercersburg finished fourth in the girls competition. Annie Spencer (3,200) and Jane Tseng (long jump) were the top finishers for the Blue Storm, each placing fourth. Christina Ongor (200), Hillary Smith (400) and Tiffany Tseng (long jump) all placed sixth.


Hancock 52, Broadfording 40: Steve Beaver led Hancock with 17 points.


Goretti 42, Smithsburg 25: Kevin Breslin scored 20 points and T.J. Graham added 13 for the Gaels (6-2), who handed Smithsburg its first loss of the year.

Steve Whitt had 12 points to lead the Leopards (12-1).

North 50, South 24: Mike McMillan scored 20 points for the Hubs. Steven Burnett had eight points for the Rebels.


Sixth grade

Smithsburg 50, Broadfording 9: Ryne Willard led Smithsburg with eight points.

Seventh Grade

Boonsboro 46, St. Mary's 12: Luis Alvarez led Boonsboro with 16 points. Devin Bender and Ben Louderback each had four points for St. Mary's.

Smithsburg 54, Clear Spring 33: Brandon Wiley and Jacob Gauff each had 11 points for Smithsburg. Brandon Glazer led Clear Spring with 17 points.

Eighth Grade

Boonsboro 53, St. Mary's 33: Keith Welch had 12 points to lead Boonsboro. Will Murray led all scorers with 19 for St. Mary's.

Smithsburg 42, Clear Spring 30: Steve Kretzer led Smithsburg with 13 points. Chris Shrader had nine points for Clear Spring.

Northern 72, Broadfording 18: Matt Boward scored 16 points to lead Northern (5-2) over Broadfording (1-6).
