Reunions

February 07, 2005

More than 60 Hagerstonians got together at a luncheon party in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, Jan. 29, sponsored by the 17 Floridians of Hagerstown High School's Class of 1953.

Those attending the luncheon at the Rolling Hills Country Club, in Longwood, Fla., were treated to a continuous slide show of about 300 pictures assembled and presented by Eddie Murfin of Jacksonville, Fla., who made the original advance arrangements for this occasion beginning nearly a year ago. The photos were from class activities and Hagerstown scenes in 1952 or 1953 and some of those same people in gatherings in 2004. Several other members of the Class of '53 submitted photos for the show.

A long table displayed printed photos, yearbooks, news clippings, etc. It was a very informal occasion, with no planned program, just a lot of fun and good food.

M.F. Kershner, of Longwood, entertained the crowd with music from the 1950s throughout the day. He also led contests for naming performers of the music and naming a collection of childhood photos submitted by attendees. Those in attendance represented graduating classes of Hagerstown High, North Hagerstown High and South Hagerstown High from 1944 through 1960.

Murfin's and Kershner's parents were longtime friends in Hagerstown and moved to Orlando within a few years of each other in the early 1950s. Murfin actually graduated from Edgewater High School in Orlando, in 1953, but was able to attend his old class's graduation ceremonies in Hagerstown immediately afterward. He has been a United Methodist pastor in Florida since the age of 18.

Anyone can view 200 of the pictures seen at the luncheon and 58 photos taken at the luncheon by going to a Web site put together by Murfin: pg.photos.yahoo.com/ ph/murfined/album?.dir=/d4f8&.src=ph&.tok=phX1FdCBsRk8C_bR.

Plans were made immediately to repeat the event on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the same time and place. For more information about the event, contact Murfin at edmurfin@bellsouth.net or 6371 Collins Road, #404, Jacksonville, FL 32244-7517, or phone 904-573-8686. It will be open to anyone from Hagerstown, from high school classes of the late '40s to early '60s, who will be in Florida on that date. Advance reservations will be required, on a first-come-first-served basis, due to space limitation of 95 persons.
