Local roundup - Mercersburg reaches 500-win milestone

February 04, 2005

FRONT ROYAL, Va. - Mercersburg Academy made history in convincing fashion Thursday, disposing of Fishburne Military Academy 71-6 for the program's 500th dual-meet victory.

The victory was 75 years in the making and coach Rick Hendrickson couldn't be more proud.

"I think it's a tribute not just to this team, but also to the strength of this program and all of the individuals and teams that have come before us," he said.

The Blue Storm (12-3) wasted no time in picking up win No. 501, beating Randolph Macon 69-12, a win highlighted by Ryan Reid's pin of Jeff Simkol in 3 minutes, 27 seconds for his 100th career victory.

"Ryan's story is particularly exciting because he only won 12 matches as a freshman," Hendrickson said. "The fact that he's won 88 matches in three years to get to 100 shows the hard work and dedication he's put in."

The victory moved Reid to 10th on Mercersburg's all-time wins list and raised his season record to 27-1.
