Budget hearing set for March 8

February 02, 2005|by JULIE E. GREENE

A public hearing on the Washington County Board of Education's draft of its proposed budget for next fiscal year will be March 8, according to a budget calendar approved Tuesday night by the school board.

The hearing will be held in the school board auditorium at 7 p.m.

The budget calendar was revised because staff fell about a month behind the original target of presenting a proposed budget to the Washington County Commissioners in early March, according to a memo about the budget calendar.

Board member and Finance Committee Chairwoman Roxanne Ober said the process fell behind as board officials spent more time on resources for each school due to enrollment increases. They had to plan for additional students this year and for more students expected next school year, she said.

Under the revised calendar, the school board would present the proposed budget to the commissioners the week of April 12, with a specific date to be worked out with the commissioners, school board officials said. That's about the same time they got it last year, Director of Budget & Finance Chris South said.

The school board will have a budget work session on Feb. 15, although the time has not been determined according to Tuesday's agenda.

The board would adopt a budget draft at its March 1 meeting, according to the budget calendar.
