Sirens silenced

February 02, 2005

SMITHSBURG - Effective Jan. 23, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services discontinued the use of the audible house siren to alert volunteers for emergency calls.

According to Capt. James Ulrich, a majority of volunteers have pagers or scanners to alert them for calls, and the belief is the use of the siren for the department was no longer needed.

The number of times the siren is activated will be reduced by several hundred because of the ambulance company's decision.
