EMS handles 96 calls in January

SMITHSBURG - Personnel with Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services Inc. responded to 96 calls in January, according to Capt. James Ulrich.

Of the calls during January, 18 were to Frederick County, Md., and two were in Franklin County, Pa.

Thirteen calls were in the Smithsburg town limits, while another six calls were in the Hagerstown area, six in the Cascade area and seven in the Mount Aetna area. Another 13 calls were to the Leitersburg area.

A total of 71 patients were transported to area hospitals during January.

The department also assisted on five fire-related calls during November.

Smithsburg EMS responded to 83 calls for service during the month of December. Of those calls, 12 were to Frederick County and two went to Franklin County.

Fourteen calls were in the Smithsburg town limits, while another seven calls were in the Hagerstown area, 11 were in the Cascade area, four were in the Mount Aetna area and nine calls were to the Leitersburg Fire Department's area.

The most common call type was vehicle/pedestrian accidents, which accounted for 20 calls. A total of 56 patients were transported to area hospitals during the month.

In 2004, Smithsburg EMS responded to 143 vehicle and pedestrian accidents, the most common call in the organization's total of 959 for the year.
