Cyrus F. Jones, 88

Cyrus Francis Jones, 88, of 254 Potomac Heights, Hagerstown, Md., died Jan. 27, 2005, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center following an illness of Alzheimer's disease.

Mr. Jones was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Howard and Bessie Applegate Jones.

He was raised in Baltimore, Md., and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1939.

He is the former owner and pharmacist of Schindel's Pharmacy, retiring in December 1981.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a first lieutenant during World War II.

He was a founding member and lifetime member of Antietam Radio Relay Association (W3EHA). He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club, Exchange Club, Potomac Playmakers, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and Hagerstown Community Concert Association.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Joanne W. Jones; two daughters, Nancy Mayfield and husband, Richard, of Elkton, Md., and Priscilla Bernhold and husband, Terry, of London, Ky; one brother, the Rev. Kenneth S. Jones and wife, Larocca, of Gaithersburg, Md. Other survivors are three stepsons, John "Buck" McCoy and wife, Cynthia, Donald McCoy and wife, Gina, and Timothy McCoy and wife, Anne-Marie, all of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.


A memorial service will be held at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N. Hagerstown, on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at 2 p.m. Family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Western Maryland.

Elizabeth M. Shetron, 84

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Elizabeth M. "Libby" Shetron, 84, of 550 Cumberland Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born May 22, 1920, in St. Thomas Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles N. and Anna Lehman Defenderfer.

Her husband of 61 years, Chalmer E. "Cham" Shetron, died April 25, 2002.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Anna Bower Sunday School class, taught Sunday school and held positions in the church.

She was a Brownie leader.

She is survived by two brothers, Warren Defenderfer of St. Thomas and George Defenderfer of Chambersburg; her niece, Kimberly Shetron Chestnut of Shippensburg, Pa., whom she raised; her nephew, Dan Shetron III, whom she raised; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, one son and one nephew.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. The Revs. John Dramazos and Diane Salter will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday at noon at the church.

Letitia M. Stickles, 84

JULY 7, 1920-JAN. 31, 2005

Letitia Marlowe Sowers Stickles, 84, of Julia Manor, 333 Mill St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 7, 1920, in Berryville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Lester and Lillie Marlowe Sowers.

She is survived by two sisters, Julia Walters of Charles Town, W.Va., and Naomi Sponaugle of Hagerstown; nieces; nephews; grandnieces; and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Sowers and Evelyn N. Rickard, and two brothers, Virgil Sowers and Tommy Sowers.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, North Potomac Street, Hagerstown.

Mary V. Johnson, 73

Mary Virginia Johnson, 73, of 19014 Rock Maple Drive, Hagerstown Md., passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at her home.

Born Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1931, in St. Paul, Minn., she was the daughter of the late Robert Davis and the late Mary Virginia Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Royal Albert Johnson, in 1999.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and Hunt Manor Women's Club. She volunteered at Jacksonville Mini Library. She enjoyed history and taking classes at HCC on the Civil War.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Birgit Johnson of Olney, Md.; son, Robert Andrew Albert Johnson of Lutherville, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Ann Boyd officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Velvet Dee Miller, 41, of Hedgesville, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 17, 1963, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Paul V. Avella and Betty Myers Avella-Snyder.
