Jacobs' double-double leads No. 5 Cougars

BOYS BASKETBALL



SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Tehron Jacobs had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 5 Jefferson past Bowling Brook 62-51 on Thursday.

Ryland Newman had 14 points and seven assists, while Vance Hosby had 12 points and six rebounds for the Cougars (7-3). Josh Brown had 10 points and five steals and Jeremy Penwell grabbed five rebounds.

Vernon Carter led Bowling Brook (5-12) with 12 points.

Williamsport 68, Catoctin 54


WILLIAMSPORT - Corey Broadwater had 14 points to lead four Williamsport players in double figures as the Wildcats beat Catoctin in MVAL Antietam action.

Phil Jordan and Tyler Beard each had 13 points and Chad Bikle added 10 for the Wildcats (4-7, 3-2).

John Tumulty had 17 points and Ian Cuddahee had 14 for Catoctin (3-10, 1-4).

MSD 86, Timber Ridge 37


FREDERICK, Md. - Maryland School for the Deaf charged out of the gates to a 31-6 lead after the first quarter and easily defeated Timber Ridge.

Derrick Williams scored 16 points and Davon Cook and Martise Colston each had 14 points for the Orioles (11-5). Colston added six assists and six steals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL



No. 8 Southern Fulton 67 Forbes Road 52


HUSTONTOWN, Pa. - Candace Bard scored 17 of her team-high 25 points from the foul line to lead Southern Fulton past Forbes Road in Sideling Hill League action.

Brandy Swope had 17 points, Sam Cain had 13 and Jessie Wigfield added nine for the Indians (15-2, 9-1). Bard and Cain each had 11 rebounds, while Swope had five assists and three steals.

Kayla Knepper led Forbes Road (7-11, 4-6) with 29 points.

Smithsburg 51, Goretti 21


SMITHSBURG - Teonna Jewell's 10-point performance helped Smithsburg (6-5) defeat injury-riddled St. Maria Goretti.

The Leopards jumped on the Gaels (7-14) early, claiming a 32-9 halftime lead. Kenzie Bowen had seven points, three assists and three steals, while Cara Jordan had six assists.

Sarah Spierenburg scored eight points for the Gaels.

East Hardy 46, Berk. Springs 42


BAKER, W.Va. - Berkeley Springs rallied, but couldn't overcome a 10-point halftime deficit and the Indians dropped a Potomac Valley Conference game to East Hardy.

Emily McCoy had 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocks before fouling out for the Indians (4-7, 1-5). Ashley Hovermale had 12 points and Heather Shaw had eight rebounds.

Towson Catholic 75, SJPH 41


FREDERICK, Md. - Towson Catholic (8-3) outscored St. John's at Prospect Hall 23-2 in the fourth quarter to seal a victory.

St. John's-PH (3-13, 1-6) got 13 points and three steals from guard Heidi Mothershead, while Elise Boyle added 10 points.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Matthew Polonchak won the 100-yard breaststroke in a school-record 1 minute, 10.06 seconds, but Jefferson (6-2) fell to James Buchanan.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The Jefferson relay team of Allison Speaker, Laura Lovett, Rikki Cushwa and Emily Koonsz won the 200-yard medley relay in 2:15.13, but the Cougars (5-3) fell to James Buchanan.

Shepherd 73, WVU-Tech 70


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Danley Shank had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead Shepherd University past West Virginia Tech in WVIAC action.

Ryan Peterson had 14 points, Darren Stackhouse had 13 and Chad Myers added nine for the Rams (6-10, 4-3). Peterson grabbed six rebounds.




WOMEN'S BASKETBALL



Mont.-Rockville 80, HCC 52


ROCKVILLE, Md. - Marissa Richardson and Rachel Dumont - the top two scorers in the Maryland JuCo Conference - torched Hagerstown Community College for 60 points.

The Hawks (9-7, 5-5) hit just 20 of 82 shots (24 percent) and couldn't dig out of a 19-point halftime hole. Gina Harshman had 12 points, while Nicole Brown had 11 and Dee Brown added 10. Erika McDavid grabbed nine rebounds.

WVU-Tech 62, Shepherd 53


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University led by six at halftime, but was outscored 35-20 in the second half in a WVIAC loss to West Virginia Tech.

LaToya Fisher had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Rams (5-9, 4-3). Tiffany Acker had nine points and Molly Land added eight.

McDaniel 77, Johns Hopkins 59


BALTIMORE - Smithsburg graduate Katy Powell had 10 points and five rebounds to help McDaniel College knock off previously unbeaten Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference.

Williamsport grad Brooke Weimer chipped in with three points and three assists for McDaniel (14-2, 9-1).
