An inmate at Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagers-town was stabbed in the upper body today by another inmate while returning from breakfast, Capt. Priscilla Doggett, public information officer for the Maryland Division of Correction said this morning.

She said the stabbing occurred at about 6:20 a.m. as inmates were returning to tier D after breakfast. She said an inmate was attacked by another inmate outside of the tier D recreation hall.

The attack started in the stairway near the tier, she said.

The inmate who was stabbed was evaluated by medical staff at the prison and then transported to Washington County Hospital for additional treatment, Doggett said.

The inmate responsible for the stabbing was taken into Maryland Division of Correction custody and was placed in segregation, she said.

A homemade weapon was recovered, she said. The prison system's internal investigation unit responded to the prison to investigate the incident, she said.

Doggett would not release the names of those involved in the stabbing. She said no charges had been filed against the prisoner responsible for the stabbing and the family of the stabbing victim had not been notified.

She said she didn't know how serious the stabbing victim's injuries were.
