Mothers make blankets for Pregnancy Center in town

In the midst of holiday preparations for their own families, members of the Hagerstown Mothers of Preschoolers also were thinking of others.

At their holiday meeting Dec. 15, the focus was on making no-sew fleece blankets, their gift to the Hagerstown Area Pregnancy Center on West Baltimore Street.

"We thought, 'Wouldn't it be great in the month of December - the month of giving - to make something to give?'" said Linda Becker, the creative activities leader of the MOPS group. "We thought, 'What a great way to show others we care.'"

She came up with the idea for the blankets, which require only cutting and tying, in keeping with her goal for fun, simple and easy projects.

The group meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from September through May at First Christian Church on Potomac Avenue for discussion, support and various activities. Members do crafts around the holidays, Becker said.

After the meeting, the women delivered the 22 blankets they made, plus some the mothers purchased on their own, to the pregnancy center.

"It was wonderful. We always tend to need blankets when the winter months come," said Lori Sines, executive director of the pregnancy center.

The Hagerstown Area Pregnancy Center offers pregnancy tests, pregnancy counseling and, in January, will have licensed medical staff on-site. It also offers a clothes closet featuring maternity clothes, infant and toddlers' clothing up to size 2T, as well as blankets and car seats for those in need.

Donations of such items, in good condition, are accepted year-round, Sines said.
