Second-half surge sends Goretti past Greencastle

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Greencastle held a 27-24 lead at halftime against St. Maria Goretti but the Gaels came back with a strong second half to post a 68-54 win on Thursday night.

Goretti (7-3) opened with seven straight points in the third period to take a 31-29 lead on a basket by Joey Spierenburg, who led the Gaels with 18 points, along with five rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots.

Tim Alexander popped a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter as Goretti surged to a 45-39 lead.

Andrew Chambers had 17 points for Goretti while Kevin Brashears led the Gaels with six rebounds. Tim Kellinger had six assists.

Greencastle (2-6), which lost for the second straight night, received a 19-point effort from Jaren Gembe, which included three 3-pointers. Brian Dodson added 15 points, all coming on 3-pointers. Treavor Gelsinger had five rebounds and seven assists for the Blue Devils.

Southern 51, Williamsport 30

WILLIAMSPORT - Williamsport scored just seven second-half points in falling to Southern Garrett, remaining winless this season.

Phil Jordan led the Wildcats (0-4) with 10 points before fouling out, while Tyler Beard and Corey Broadwater each scored eight.

Corey Tressler had a game-high 22 points and Cory Bosley added 12 for Southern Garrett (5-1).

So. Fulton 57, Everett 54

EVERETT, Pa. - Brock Flowers scored 17 points for Southern Fulton as it slipped past Everett (7-3, 2-2) in a Sideling Hill League contest.

Jay Ifert added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Indians (8-0, 5-0) while Chris Krause had 10 points and nine rebounds.

McConnellsburg 70 Tussey Mountain 52

SAXTON, Pa. - Matt Spriggs recorded his second straight triple-double, scoring 17 points along with 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead McConnellsburg.

Russell Glazier led the Spartans (7-3, 3-2) with 20 points and Dave Thomas had 20 rebounds and five blocked shots.
