Water main break cuts service to city residents

December 21, 2004|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

A 6-inch water main on Park Lane in the city's North End broke Monday between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Hagers-town Water and Sewer Department Manager David Shindle said.

About 15 households were without service for several hours, Shindle said. The break was near Park Lane's intersection with Saint Clair Street. Shindle said he expected the main to be repaired by midnight.

Shindle said the break was the only one recorded Monday, although some customers lost water service due to frozen lines.

Shindle recommended that to avoid freezing water pipes, customers should leave cold water taps running with a "very small stream." Those who have had the problem before should be especially careful, he said.

There's nothing customers can do to avoid a main break, he said, but "just report it to us and we'll get it fixed."
