Don't dry out in winter

December 20, 2004

The American Academy of Dermatology at www.aad.org on the Web offers the following tips for skin care during the winter months:

· Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. This can keep skin from drying and becoming cracked and itchy.

· Switch to an oil-based moisturizer, and moisturize frequently.

· Apply a heavy layer of moisturizing broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to the face, hands and any other skin that might be exposed before going outside.

· Wear gloves to protect hands from the cold and dry air.

· The most common triggers of the scratch/itch cycle are sweating and overheating, so dress in layers so you can remove clothing as needed. Be sure to wear loose-fitting cotton fabrics next to your skin.
