Area Girl Scouts take part in 'Explore Nursing' event

December 19, 2004

WINCHESTER, Va. - More than 800 Girl Scouts and adults from Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia journeyed to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center in November to participate in the first "Come Explore Nursing" event.

Nurses, nursing students and other health-related personnel provided an educational and fun day for the Girl Scouts of Shawnee Council. Badge activities were designed for Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts.

Among the activities were learning to take blood pressure, listening to heart and lung sounds, viewing body parts from cadavers, learning how to care for an infant, what it takes to be a flight nurse and more.

Older Scouts were shown how to give injections, how to start an IV and how to work with a tracheotomy.

Participants were able to talk with nursing students from Shenandoah University, Shepherd University and Lord Fairfax Community College about pursuing a career in nursing.

Carol Diehl, program director for Shawnee Council, said the event gave girls a great opportunity to learn about a nursing career.
