Sobriety checks planned

Maryland State Police, the Washington County Sheriff's Department and the Hagerstown Police Department will be conducting a joint sobriety checkpoint throughout the week on highways in Washington County, state police said.

Police said officers will conduct a checkpoint and roving patrols in an attempt to remove drunken drivers from area roads during the preholiday season.

Man injured when train, car collide

MT. AIRY, Md. - A Damascus, Md., man's car was struck by a train Wednesday as he attempted to drive it over railroad tracks near a crossing at Old Mill Bottom Road, Maryland State Police said.

Michael A. Lee, 48, of 25720 Valley Park Terrace, was driving a 1995 Mercury Sable when it collided with a CSX train carrying a load of new cars, according to police. Police said it is unclear why Lee attempted to cross the tracks at that location because there was an actual crossing area about 80 feet from the point of impact.

Police said Lee was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. His condition was not available Wednesday night.

Police were investigating the incident late Wednesday.
