Volunteer Center is established

December 12, 2004

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -Chip Bennett, campaign chairman of the Jefferson County United Way and member of the Rotary Club of Charles Town, introduced the director of the newly established Volunteer Center of the Eastern Panhandle, Trina Bartlett, at a recent Rotary luncheon.

The Volunteer Center of the Eastern Panhandle is a new program of the United Way of Jefferson County. The goal of the center is to serve nonprofit organizations throughout the Eastern Panhandle, not specifically those organizations funded by the United Way. The Volunteer Center's purpose is to identify resources to meet community needs.

"Services will be piloted in Jefferson County," Bartlett said. "But staff will also work with organizations in Berkeley and Morgan counties on a more limited basis initially."

The center initially will connect people with opportunities to serve within the community. The center will collaborate with the West Virginia Commission on National and Community Service to take advantage of the statewide, Web-based database of volunteer opportunities and develop an in-house database of organizational volunteer needs.

Staff at the center also can assist organizations with writing position descriptions for volunteers, organize and/or provide training on volunteer management and link organizations with resources on volunteer management.

"By involving volunteers, organizations can provide greater service to the community and leverage the dollars they have," Bartlett said.

For more information on the center, call Bartlett at 304-725-8972 or send e-mail to volunteercenter@citlink.net.
